Live anywhere near the Aberdeen coastline, from Footdee to Cove Bay, and your front door takes a battering that inland doors never see. Salt-laden air, horizontal rain and gusts straight off the North Sea will find the weakness in a cheap door within a couple of winters. Composite doors are usually the right answer here, but only if you understand why, and what to look for in the spec.
Salt spray is the main culprit. Airborne salt can travel well over a mile inland on a stiff easterly, so this affects homes across much of Aberdeen and the shire coast, not just seafront properties. Salt accelerates corrosion on metal hardware, breaks down some paints and finishes, and works into any hairline gap it can find.
Then there is the moisture cycle. Traditional timber doors absorb rain and swell, then shrink again in a dry spell, which is why so many older doors in coastal Aberdeenshire stick in winter and rattle in summer. Add wind-driven rain hitting the door face at pressure and you have a genuinely demanding environment that exposes weak seals, soft cores and budget hinges quickly.
A composite door pairs a solid or foam-filled core with a GRP (glass reinforced plastic) outer skin, typically 2 to 3mm thick on decent doors. GRP is the same family of material used for boat hulls, so it shrugs off salt and moisture in a way painted timber simply cannot. It will not swell, warp or rot, and the colour is formed into the skin rather than sitting on top, so there is no paint film for salt to lift.
The core matters too. Solid timber core doors (usually around 44 to 48mm thick) are heavier and feel very secure, while foam core doors offer better insulation, often achieving U-values around 1.0 to 1.4 W/m²K. Either type performs well on the coast, because the vulnerable element is not really the slab. It is everything around it.
When a composite door disappoints a coastal homeowner, it is almost never the door slab. It is the hardware and the fitting. Standard mild steel or cheaply plated handles, letterplates and hinges can start pitting within 12 to 18 months in a salty environment. For homes near the sea, it is worth specifying stainless steel or marine-grade hardware, or at minimum hardware with a proper salt spray test rating (look for 480 hours or more to BS EN 1670 grade 5).
Installation is the other half of the story. A door facing east or north-east in Aberdeen will take wind-driven rain at pressure, so the frame needs to be properly packed, sealed with low-modulus silicone suited to coastal use, and fitted with a weather bar and low threshold drainage that actually works. A brilliant door badly fitted will still let water track in at the cill during a storm.
uPVC doors are cheaper and also resist salt, but the slabs are lighter, flex more in strong wind, and darker colours can fade or bow in sun after a decade or so. Timber looks superb on a granite terrace but demands repainting every 3 to 5 years on an exposed coastal elevation, and even then movement is hard to avoid. Aluminium performs well if it has marine-grade powder coating, though it usually costs more than composite for similar thermal performance.
For most Aberdeen homes, composite sits in the sweet spot. Expect to pay somewhere in the region of £1,200 to £2,500 fitted depending on size, glazing, core type and hardware spec, with marine-grade upgrades adding a modest amount on top. The honest caveat is that prices depend heavily on the individual opening and any remedial work to the surround, so treat any figure quoted without a survey as indicative only.
Composite doors are low maintenance, not no maintenance, especially by the sea. A few small habits will keep hardware and seals in good order for decades.
